Passable.

I was quite impressed by Johnny's ability to portray such a serious and grounded character, despite the fact that he usually plays more eccentric characters. The plot keeps you choked with the constant tension of wondering what connection there is between the book's unique volumes or why their collectors were dying. I also liked the mystical air brought by the girl who ended up running into Dean everywhere. It's not made very clear what she was exactly, but I don't think she was a mere human. Finally, the final touch is the burning of Balkan along with the castle due to his fanaticism, how the mysterious girl later consummates the ritual by making love with Dean, and he ends up collecting all the engravements, opening the door to hell.

🎬 Roman Polanski nous livre ici un pur chef-d'oeuvre en terme de thriller fantastique. Cette enquête sur le secret d'un livre diabolique nous plonge dans un suspense énorme, qui en fait un thriller comme on en voit pas si souvent. Johnny Depp est au sommet de son art et Emmanuelle Seignier plus énigmatique que jamais. Des effets spéciaux quasiment inexistants, tout est dans l'intrigue, on veut tout savoir, on essaye de prendre part à la résolution du mystère. La bande son colle très bien à l'ambiance du film.
